Avril Kentridge on the Circle Senior Living Rocktirement Podcast

The Circle Senior Living Rocktirement Podcast continues to bring extraordinary stories of life, purpose, and resilience to the forefront. This time, we had the privilege of welcoming Avril Kentridge, a remarkable woman nearing her 100th birthday. From her beginnings as a dancer to her current role as a fitness instructor, Avril’s life is a testament to living with vitality and determination at any age.

A century of memories

Avril Kentridge was born on 15 March, 1924, in Durban, South Africa. As she approaches her 100th birthday, she reflects on a life that spans nearly a century of remarkable experiences. From winning the All England Dance Competition at just 12 years old to surviving a perilous journey back to South Africa during World War II, Avril’s stories are nothing short of captivating.

“I was heading to be a ballet dancer when I was young,” she shares during the podcast. But life had other plans. Despite leaving her formal dance aspirations behind, Avril’s active spirit never wavered. Her memories of dancing, performing, and teaching others are filled with joy and a sense of purpose.

Staying active and making a difference

Even now, at nearly 100, Avril remains a fitness instructor, teaching chair aerobics to her peers at her retirement residence. Her classes are as much about movement as they are about community, and her energy is contagious. “I get applause when I’m finished, and they’re sore too,” she laughs.

She credits her daily exercise routine, including morning stretches in bed, for her physical well-being. “I’m a fiend for exercises,” Avril says. She says she wakes up early and starts with her feet, working her way up to arms. Movement is key.

Her classes also serve a charitable purpose, with small donations going towards community events at her residence. Avril explains it’s not just about the exercise, it’s really all about coming together.

At Circle Senior Living, this philosophy resonates deeply. The community fosters spaces and opportunities for residents to stay active and connected, from rooftop yoga sessions to creative workshops. Avril’s story exemplifies how staying engaged can lead to a fulfilling and vibrant life.

Navigating life’s challenges

Avril’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She has faced life’s trials with resilience. She recounts how her family narrowly avoided tragedy by choosing a ship bound for South Africa instead of one that was later torpedoed.

These experiences have shaped Avril’s perspective on life. “You have to work at being 100,” she says. Her advice? Stay active, eat well, and keep a positive mindset.

Her story mirrors Circle Senior Living’s commitment to supporting residents in living their best lives, even through challenging times. With a focus on wellness and community, Circle offers a supportive environment where individuals can thrive.

Creativity and lifelong passions

Beyond fitness, Avril’s creativity has been a constant source of joy. From dancing and singing to art and golf, she has always embraced her passions. Even in her 80s, she held her first art exhibition, showcasing works she had created throughout her life.

Her cousin, renowned artist William Kentridge, opened the exhibition, which featured 144 pieces. “I never thought I’d do something like that at 82,” Avril reflects. But it just goes to show, you’re never too old to try something new.

At Circle Senior Living, residents are encouraged to pursue their interests, whether it’s through art classes, gardening, or learning a new skill. Avril’s story serves as a reminder that creativity knows no age limit.

Lessons from a long life

Avril attributes her longevity to a combination of healthy habits and an active mind. She has always been careful with her food, she didn’t eat too many cakes or sweets, and she stayed active. She also highlights the importance of staying mentally engaged, whether through playing bridge or organising activities for her peers.

Aligning with Circle Senior Living’s thoughts on retirement, her advice for retirement is to not let life slow down. Retirement doesn’t mean stopping. It’s a chance to try new things and keep moving.

This ethos aligns perfectly with Circle Senior Living’s vision of redefining retirement. The Rocktirement Podcast is an extension of this mission, showcasing how later life can be a time of growth, connection, and purpose.
